Energy & Environment 2007 - U.S. Gulf South Vendor Forum
December 6 & 7, 2007

On December 6 & 7, NEIA welcomed a distinguished group of U.S. environmental and energy industry professionals to St. John’s. Energy & Environment 2007 (E&E 2007) was the third in a series of NEIA forums highlighting business opportunities for Newfoundland and Labrador companies in the United States. The objective of E&E 2007 was to educate NEIA members about the market for engineering and environmental services in the U.S. and introduce them to potential partners and clients. During an industry forum on December 6, five representatives of U.S. companies shared their perspectives on how small- and medium-sized firms can take advantage of contracting opportunities in Houston, the surrounding Gulf South region and the United States in general.

On December 7, NEIA members had one-on-one meetings with the U.S. companies during a supplier development session. Energy & Environment 2007 also included informal opportunities for members to network with NEIA’s U.S. guests.

NEIA thanks Tiller Engineering Inc. for sponsoring its E&E Networking Social at Bridie Molloy’s.

Introducing the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises - October 22, 2007

On October 22nd, Anne Thomas and Ian MacDonald from the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises (OSME) delivered an informative luncheon on how the OSME can help NEIA members sell their goods and services to the Government of Canada.

OSME was created within Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) to make it easier for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to compete for government business.

Ms Thomas and Mr. MacDonald outlined how OSME can help SMEs by raising awareness about opportunities available, by helping SMEs successfully market their products, and by cutting through red tape. Included in the presentation was an overview of the services PWGSC offers and the types of products PWGSC purchases - which includes anything from flu vaccines to environmental products!

NEIA hopes to have OSME present again in the new year, so don’t miss the opportunity to learn how to do business - more easily than ever before - with the government of Canada!

40 Hour HAZWOPER Training Course and 8 Hour HAZWOPER Refresher Training Course – Week of September 24-28

Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industry Association (NEIA), in association with Atlantic Environmental Training & On-Site Services Inc., conducted a 40 Hour HAZWOPER (hazardous waste operations & emergency response) training course and an 8 Hour HAZWOPER Refresher training course during the week of September 24-28, 2007.

This certification is recognized in the US and Canada for work performed at uncontrolled waste sites. DCC and PWGSC are now requiring contractors to have this certification to qualify for some tenders involving hazmat.

Course instructors have over 40 years experience, making this one of the most comprehensive training courses offered. 30 participants attended in total and the course was a great success. We look forward to offering it again in 2009.

AGM, Conference & Trade Show: The Environment and Municipalities: Sustaining Our Future

NEIA’s 2007 Annual General Meeting, Conference and Trade Show was held March 1st and 2nd at the Holiday Inn, St. John’s. This year, NEIA introduced a specific event theme and accompanying slogan: The Environment and Municipalities: Sustaining Our Future.

There are several significant environmental issues affecting Newfoundland and Labrador’s communities, including the close of the Abitibi Mill in Stephenville, the clean-up of the St. John’s harbour, solid waste management, and the growing problem of poor air quality and mold in public buildings. This year’s agenda capitalized on the currency of these issues.

This year’s conference featured the expertise of several prominent speakers, including Mayor Tom O’Brien of Stephenville, Mayor Steve Kent of Mount Pearl, Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Environment and Conservation and Honourable Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs. Each speaker provided a timely, insightful and informative presentation. Topics included changing guidelines for water quality, the effect of provincial decisions on municipalities and wind power in Newfoundland and Labrador.

As with previous years, NEIA held a panel discussion. This year, the panel discussed the problem of air quality and mold in public buildings. The two-hour panel discussion was capped off with a question and answer period.
