Christmas Social - December 18, 2008

On Thursday, December 18 th, NEIA held its famous Christmas social at the legendary Crow’s Nest. In this unique and inviting atmosphere, NEIA members enjoyed great conversation, scrumptious food, and good ol’ fashioned Christmas cheer.

Patrick Martin of DRAY Media won the door prize from Air Labrador, which included two travel vouchers to anywhere Air Labrador flies. Bill Butler of Hi-Point Industries won the second door prize which was a gift card to the Keg (always a great dining spot!)

A wonderful time was had by all and we are already looking forward to next year!

NEIA “Meet and Greet” Networking Social - October 22nd, 2008

On October 22 nd, 2008, NEIA staff and the Board of Directors came together at the Holiday Inn, St. John’s to extend a warm welcome to Mr. Dave Kiell, NEIA’s new Executive Director. Approximately 40 NEIA members had the opportunity to catch up with other members, in addition to meeting Dave. We are delighted that Dave has joined the NEIA team and look forward to working with him in the coming year.


Innovation, Trade and Rural Development (INTRD) Luncheon - September 25th, 2008

At this luncheon, Larry Weatherbie, Director of Fisheries Adjustment and Economic Diversification, provided an overview of the funding programs INTRD offers to new entrepreneurs, private sector enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses and individuals looking to develop a business idea. Mr. Weatherbie outlined the details of each program and how to apply for the necessary funding.

Programs reviewed were:

· Commercialization Program
· Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Fund
· Direct Equity Tax Credit Program
· Edge Program
· Business Networks Program

City of St. John’s: New Curbside Waste Diversion Programs for 2009 and $56 Million Re-Engineering of Robin Hood Bay Landfill Breakfast - September 18th, 2008

At this revealing breakfast session, NEIA members learned of The City of St. John’s new comprehensive curbside recycling and compost pick-up program (currently being developed and to be unveiled in the winter of 2009), as well as information pertaining to the $56M re-engineering of the Robin Hood Bay Sanitary Landfill. The landfill is to be transformed into a full service Integrated Waste Management Facility to service the Greater Avalon Region. This new site will include a recycling facility, a composting facility, an environmentally sound landfill, a leachate collection system, a methane collection system and a public drop-off area. Construction is ongoing and to date more than $24M has been awarded in construction contracts.

The City of St. John’s waste diversion program and the changes in waste management and disposal practices at Robin Hood Bay are a reflection of the targets and goals of the Provincial Waste Management Strategy.

Hosted by Shelley Pardy of the City of St. John’s, this breakfast session allowed attendees to gain advance particulars on both the curbside recycling program and the $56M Robin Hood Bay retrofit, and to uncover potential business opportunities. After the session, Ms Pardy had a question and answer segment so that attendees could have their individual questions and concerns addressed.


Worker’s Compensation: What You Don’t Know Will Cost You! Luncheon - September 15th, 2008

Workers Compensation issues can be difficult for a company to manage and often cause headaches and confusion. By attending this luncheon, NEIA members learned first hand how to successfully avoid this confusion. Presented by Dallas Mercer of DMC Consulting, this informative luncheon provided valuable insights on how to successfully deal with Workers’ Compensation issues and how not to make mistakes in doing so. Topics covered included:

- Knowing what you are paying
- The importance of managing claims
- Pitfalls to avoid
- How to reduce assessment rates
- How PRIME affects assessment rates

NEIA Networking Social - Beachy Cove Café, Portugal Cove

On Wednesday, September 10th, a group of NEIA members headed to the splendid Beachy Cove Café in Portugal Cove to enjoy delightful conversation, fabulous food and each other’s company. It was an ideal way to mark the beginning of the fall season.

Guests enjoyed sociables on the deck and then proceeded inside where NEIA had booked a block of window tables, for a delicious dinner of their choosing from the menu. The fish and chips meal is especially recommended!

Beachy Cove Café has excellent background music, a view of Bell Island and the ferry, and is recommended in “Where to Eat in Canada”.

National Research Council’s (NRC) Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) Luncheon - May 28, 2008

At this luncheon, renowned Industrial Technology Advisor Bob Robinson provided an overview of the NRC-IRAP program. NRC-IRAP is a national program that assists Canadian Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs). By providing scientific, technical, financial and marketing advisory services to SMEs, NRC-IRAP gives SMEs the tools needed to turn ideas into workable products and services.

Participants learned how NRC-IRAP can offer SMEs technical assistance, resources and advice on product design and marketing services, as well as potential financial assistance to support Research and Development activities. Mr. Robinson’s thorough and comprehensive presentation was a boon for entrepreneurs with new business ideas in that it delineated how to turn those ideas into something tangible.

Lets Talk Exports Luncheon - May 26, 2008

NEIA was delighted to partner once again with EDC on the Let’s Talk Exports Luncheon featuring Peter Hall, Vice-President and Deputy Chief Economist of EDC. The Global Export Forecast is presented yearly and offers an in-depth analysis of the world economy by sector and by country, drawing out the implications for Canada's economy, exports, interest rates and the dollar.

Mr. Hall provided a presentation consisting of information drawn from EDC’s Global Export Forecast, Spring 2008 edition. Over 90 NEIA members attended and took away a clear understanding of the risks and opportunities for their businesses in 2008-2009. Comparing the Canadian economy to a hard-fought chess game, Mr. Hall delivered a revealing and thought provoking presentation. No doubt members will be interested in seeing if his prediction on the future price of oil comes true!


Contractor Briefing Session: Goose Bay Remediation Project, 5 Wing Goose Bay - April 25, 2008

The Department of National Defence (DND) and Defence Construction Canada (DCC), in association with NEIA, held a contractor briefing session on Friday, April 25 from 12:00-2:00 pm. This session discussed upcoming requirements and contracting plans for the Goose Bay Remediation Project, 5 Wing Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Attendees learned how DCC procures contracts for DND, and how they can take advantage of the booming opportunities becoming available. During the power point presentation, the Atlantic Regional Contracting Manager discussed Merx, Source Lists, and SELECT, as they relate to finding work for the Goose Bay remediation project. Also included in the presentation, was an overview of security requirements and information on how to complete tender documents, etc., for when the projects go out for Tender.

Nearly 40 people were in attendance. This thorough and insightful presentation sparked a great question and answer period afterward and was well received by attendees. Click here for a copy of the presentation.


AGM, Conference & Trade Show: Green: the Colour of Opportunity in Newfoundland & Labrador - March 6 & 7, 2008

NEIA’s 2008 AGM, Conference and Trade Show - held March 6th and 7th at the Holiday Inn - was a huge success! This year, NEIA focused on climate change and the opportunities in green energy alternatives.

The conference featured several prominent speakers, including Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, and Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources. Conference presentations included climate impacts on Newfoundland and Labrador, harnessing ocean energy, brownfield restoration, and how green energy can make buildings more sustainable. Each speaker provided an insightful and informative presentation.
