NEIA Participates in the First in a Series of Workshops to Address Province’s Rural Drinking Water Challenges
On Wednesday, November 18 th, 2009 NEIA, in partnership with MITACS and the Leslie Harris Center of Regional Policy and Development, hosted an all day workshop which addressed the challenges facing the Province’s rural drinking water systems. Entitled Water…A MixedSolution, this workshop united key stakeholders from industry, government, various communities and the University to discuss such issues as decaying rural infrastructure, water treatment and community health, and the shortage of human resources in managing complicated systems.
The workshop featured two panel discussions and a keynote address by Dr. Jim Sharpe, Emeritus Professor. In between presentations, attendees were divided into discussion groups where each group prioritized the issues and discussed potential solutions.
The event also served as a kick off to a 10-year program through Memorial University’s Harris Centre which was established through a historic donation from the RBC Foundation. The funding will enable Memorial University researchers to work with rural communities in Newfoundland and Labrador on issues related to drinking water.

NEIA Partners with MMSB to Deliver Waste Management Workshop
On October 22nd, NEIA partnered with the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) to host a one-day workshop entitled The Upside of Waste Management: Exploring Business Opportunities from the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy. The aim of the workshop was to highlight possible economic opportunities resulting from the implementation of the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy.
More than 100 industry professionals gathered to hear from an outstanding roster of guest speakers, both from within and from outside the province. During the luncheon address, the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation launched MMSB’s new Solid Waste Management Innovation Fund for the research and development of new or improved technology products, services and processes that support the implementation of the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy. The $100,000 fund is available to provincially-owned and/or operated businesses, industry associations, post-secondary institutions and non-profit organizations.
“One of the key components of the waste management strategy is to maximize economic and employment opportunities associated with waste management in the province,” said Minister Johnson. “We will achieve this through government partnerships with businesses, industry associations and post-secondary institutions, as we continue to move the waste management agenda forward for the province.”
NEIA Executive Director, Linda Bartlett was confident that the workshop achieved its objectives. “It served as a springboard in indentifying new products and services that can be generated from the practice of recycling, reusing and recovery. Potential employment and entrepreneurial opportunities were identified and it provided a forum for strategic alliances to develop. ”
NEIA will continue collaborating with other industries and government bodies to identify and promote responsible economic and business opportunities in the environmental sector.
