Now What?
Global Export Forecast
Spring 2008
The relentless appreciation of the Canadian dollar has now been joined by a significant slowing in global demand. With today’s economy-talk gradually becoming more focused on the reach and the depth of the weakness south of the border, and the outlook for non-US markets also fading, Canada’s export prospects have dimmed. Indeed, the most recent data point to a substantial weakening of the export sector. Like a hard-fought chess game, the Canadian economy has made fancy moves in adverse conditions, and stayed out of trouble. But suddenly we’re in check. Now what?
Peter Hall, Vice-President & Deputy Chief Economist of EDC, will provide a presentation consisting of information drawn from EDC’s Global Export Forecast – Spring 2008 edition. The Global Export Forecast offers an in-depth analysis of the world economy by sector and by country, drawing out the implications for Canada's economy, exports, interest rates and the dollar. Attendees will take away a clear understanding of the risks and opportunities for their business in 2008-2009.

NEIA St. Pierre et Miquelon Environmental Cooperation
On April 17th, NEIA Executive Director Bonnie Andrews, Past President Chris Palmer and Vice President Bill Scott met with representatives from St. Pierre et Miquelon (SPM) regarding the potential for cooperation between SPM and NEIA member companies.
Waste Management
SPM plans to release a Waste Management Strategy by the end of June. Officials will be looking for outside companies - either from Newfoundland and Labrador or Halifax - to accept and process solid waste and recyclables. To that end, talks between SPM, Burin Peninsula officials, the Schooner Regional Development Corporation and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador have already begun.
Oil Spill Preparedness
SPM recognizes that a spill on the southern shore of Newfoundland and Labrador will impact the French islands and officials are willing to participate in preparedness talks, response exercises and other response tactics.
Other
NEIA members also specialize in areas of environmental management and rotection other than waste management/diversion and oil spill response that may be of interest to SPM.
NEIA members interested in exploring partnership opportunities with SPM are asked to contact Bonnie Andrews at 772-3336, bonnie@neia.org or Chris Palmer at 335-8272, info@connectionsresearch.com.
