Ocean Net was formed in 1997, and is a proactive, all volunteer organization based in Newfoundland & Labrador. Its primary mandate is to help reverse the polluting of the world's oceans and to stop the unacceptable destruction of marine life by lost "ghost" fishing nets.
Ocean Net is partnering with diving clubs, schools, fishermen, community organizations, government agencies and environmental groups to implement a series of environmental initiatives which include: programs for the location and retrieval of lost fishing nets (ghost nets); "Adopt A Beach" cleanup programs for schools and communities; "Trash Ashore" programs for recreational boaters and fishermen; Designation and development of Marine Conservation Areas; and Development and promotion of educational materials, including coloured posters depicting the ECO-Tourism products in each Marine Conservation Area. In addition, distribution of educational material "Beach Goers Tips", "Boaters Tips" and "Strategies for a Cleaner and Healthier Ocean", outline ways to eliminate pollution.
