Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada works in two separate, but complementary areas. The Department promotes prosperity and security and defends Canada's interests in the world.

In terms of foreign affairs, the Department is responsible for implementing an international global policy for Canada. It ensures Canada’s presence in 159 of the world's 192 independent states.

In terms of international trade, the Department helps Canadian companies expand and succeed in international markets. Moreover, it promotes Canada as a dynamic place in which to invest and do business, while also negotiating and administering trade agreements.
