In Newfoundland and Labrador, economic growth is influenced by our resource-based economy and unique marine environment. By attaining a strategic balance of priorities between environmental efficiency and increasing industry competitiveness, environmental firms will enhance their diversity and versatility. Today, the environmental industry continues to expand and develop expertise to take advantage of business opportunities. Of the over 4,000 environmental companies in Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador has over 200 and employs approximately 2,000 people. The sector contributes an estimated $80 to $100 million annually to the provincial economy.
The environmental industry includes environmental consultants, waste management specialists, engineering and information technology firms, manufacturers, and research and development companies in three distinct areas:
- Environmental Protection
- Conservation and Preservation of Natural Resources
- Environmental Education, Communications and Research
A growing number of industries and organizations have responded to environmental challenges by developing and implementing new processes and technologies, as well as sound waste management strategies. It takes insight to assess industry problems and ingenuity to find the right solutions. Newfoundland and Labrador's environmental firms do just this and are continually proving themselves to the international market through partnerships, strategic alliances and joint ventures.
