Crisis & Opportunity in the Aftermath of Katrina:
Partnering in the Public Service on the U.S. Gulf Coast
St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador

NEIA recently played host to a group of U.S. disaster response and emergency management professionals – among them, individuals who were first responders following last year’s Hurricane Katrina and those contracted to lead efforts to rebuild the communities of the central Gulf Coast devastated by the storm.

On Thursday, Nov. 16, NEIA hosted Energy & Environment 2006. Themed “Crisis and Opportunity in the Aftermath of Katrina,” E&E 2006 focused on the extraordinary partnering of public sector agencies and disaster response specialists that saved tens of thousands of lives after Katrina. In the year since, this partnership has continued to rebuild the infrastructure, communities and economies of the central Gulf Coast after the biggest natural disaster in U.S. history.

Today, U.S. federal and state governments are investing tens of billions of dollars to rebuild basic infrastructure, renew business activity and restore the communities and economies of the Gulf Coast. To tell the story of catastrophe, recovery and rejuvenation that is Katrina, NEIA recruited some of America’s top disaster response and emergency preparedness professionals. The five E&E speakers are leaders in their fields and played major roles in the immediate response to Katrina and in the recovery efforts that have followed.

On Friday, Nov. 17, NEIA hosted a members-only Exporter Breakfast, which gave NEIA members the opportunity to brief the E&E panelists on their products and services. The Exporter Breakfast was followed by a roundtable discussion with the Canadian Coast Guard, Public Safety and Emergency Management Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
